- The new Circularity Passport will enable surpassing the 92% circularity rate in containers.
- A sustainable innovation that ensures and increases circularity, reduces waste and maximizes the sustainability of all its products.
- Equimodal’s containers for intermodal transport, containerized solutions for renewable energies, and smart, rapidly deployable containers are the first to incorporate the Circularity Passport.
Zaragoza, Spain. August 1, 2023. With the aim of ensuring and increasing the circularity of containers manufactured by Equimodal, the Spanish company’s engineering team has defined a Circular Economy indicator called “Container Circularity Indicator – CCI” which measures the percentage of circularity in the final product and is included in the innovative Circularity Passport that accompanies the delivery of each product.
For the past 30 years, Equimodal has been a leading provider of integrated solutions for the intermodal transport, renewable energy, and smart rapid-deployment container sectors. The company has consistently demonstrated a strong commitment to people, society, and the environment. Obtaining the ISO 14005:2015 certification marked the first concrete step in their proactive approach to sustainability, reducing carbon footprint, and resource efficiency. In 2021, Equimodal initiated a comprehensive framework for transitioning to a Circular Economy, a more efficient economic management model aimed at “adding innovation and reducing burden from the planet.” As one of the first companies recognized by the Government of Aragón with the Aragón Circular Seal and more recently, awarded the Innovative SME Seal by the Ministry of Science and Innovation of the Spanish Government.
Equimodal’s engineering team is actively addressing key sustainability challenges, such as reducing waste generated by containers at the end of their life cycle and minimizing environmental impact. As a result of their efforts in waste reduction and taking a step further, they have defined the”Container Circularity Indicator – CCI” and designed and implemented an innovative Circular Passport. This sustainability strategy ensures and increases circularity, reduces waste, and maximizes the sustainability of Equimodal’s manufactured products, conveying these economic and environmental benefits to their customers.
“The primary objective of the Circularity Passport is to achieve a circularity percentage of over 92% in our products. We are simultaneously working in thre eareas: Eco-design, Continuous Improvement, and Defining Valorization Operations, “stated María Domínguez, CEO of Equimodal.
The Eco-design area adopts a circular engineering-based design approach, carefully selecting the raw materials used in container manufacturing and prioritizing design options that facilitate valorization operations.
Understanding the importance of constantly measuring and improving the circularity percentage of containers, Equimodal defined the “Container Circularity Indicator – CCI.” This indicator is crucial for evaluating the real impact of actions and ensuring that materials and components of containers are effectively reintegrated in to the value chain.
The third key area of work involves defining valorization operations for proper circularization management. Equimodal implements systems that ensure containers at the end of their life cycle are collected and processed responsibly, allowing materials to be recycled or reintroduced as secondary resources in to the value chain, including managing this end – of – life process.
“Our circular engineering approach is a tangible response to the environmental challenges we face in our industry. We are committed to seeking sustainable solutions and effectively reducing our environmental footprint. By maximizing the circularity of our containers, we aim to make a significant contribution to resource conservation and waste reduction,” emphasized Domínguez.
“We take great pride in our team. The commitment, enthusiasm, and effort of our production and engineering team members enable us to remain leaders in innovation, demonstrating how circular engineering can generate significant economic and environmental benefits, prioritizing sustainability and promoting positive change in our sector.”
Equimodal began its journey 30 years ago by manufacturing top-quality intermodal containers. Today, it is an engineering company and industrial factory that designs, manufactures, homologates, and integrates containers for intermodal transport, containerized solutions for renewable energies, and smart, rapidly deployable containers. Products and solutions with which they continue to go around the world. With more than 25,000 units manufactured, of which currently 70% are destined for export; 500 models of containers certified in their own unique laboratory in Spain accredited by ENAC, facilities of 15,000 m2 with a production capacity of 1 container per hour; A reference in their segment thanks to a strong commitment to three pillars: innovation, talent, and sustainability.
